Artistic Residencies

Oceanic research as a multi-sensory artistic experience.

The As Above, So Below artist residencies, organized by One Ocean Foundation and ZEITGEIST19, foster in-depth research and interdisciplinary exchange between artists, marine scientists, and thinkers across the Mediterranean Sea. Centered on biodiversity, ocean conservation, ecosystem restoration, and our evolving rela-

tionship with nature, the program encourages art and science to flow together as complementary ways of knowing. Artist-in-residence Yoko Shimizu worked on board the ONE catamaran research vessel in Greece during M.A.R.E. Project’s expedition – Marine Adventure for Research and Education – a project by

Fondazione Centro Velico Caprera, with the scientific collaboration of One Ocean Foundation, exploring natural phenomena and the rhythms of the sea. On this travelling scientific platform, researchers, students, sailors, and citizens collect data, monitor species and habitats, and study pollution and biodiversity, contributing to understanding and safeguarding the fragile Mediterranean ecosystem.

Artist-in-residence Antoine Bertin spent time on Giudecca Island at Fabbrica H3 with SerenDPT, attuning to the lively underwater soundscapes of the Venetian Lagoon through submerged listening practices. Shaped by rising sea levels, erosion, and increasingly frequent acqua alta, the lagoon’s changing conditions inform a shifting

acoustic ecology, where natural rhythms, marine species communications and human presence intertwine. The work is presented within the former Church of Santi Cosma and Damiano, whose reverberant architecture becomes an extension of the lagoon itself. Here, sound circulates like water, creating a dialogue between envi-

ronment, history, and perception, and inviting a deeper attunement to a transforming ecosystem. The works presented in the As Above, So Below exhibition are directly inspired by these experiences and by scientific research conducted alongside marine practitioners, transforming observation into sensory, poetic, and immersive artworks that reflect interconnectedness, flow, and ecological awareness.
